Another Anniversary Frank Zappa Audio Documentary
project/object celebrating Zappa's Cruising With Ruben &
The Jets. The Doo Wop and Pachuco references mark this
as Zappa's homage to the music and culture of his teenage
world in 1950's Southern California. Contains
Original 1968 Vinyl Stereo Mix, Interviews and Related
Rarities.
“This is an album of greasy love songs cretin
simplicity,” says Zappa in the original liner notes for the
album he produced in 1968. “We made it because we really
like this kind of music (just a bunch of old men with rock
and roll clothes on sitting around the studio mumbling about
the good old days).” Joe Travers calls this release a “UMRK
(Utility Muffin Research Kitchen) Boss First” – the original
stereo mix, the original release.
Greasy Love Songs is due out May 1 on Zappa
Records. Yes. The digipak is made from Metalyzed Polyester
foil paper.
Among additional tracks included are alternate mono
mixes, an unreleased cover of “Valerie" which enjoyed heavy
rotation in the Mothers' concerts circa 1967 and a version
of “Love of My Life" from Studio Z, bringing this CD from 40
minutes in the vinyl release to well over an hour of “the
stuff of teen-age legend," according to Gail Zappa.
“The thrall, the threnodies, the three and four part
harmonies, the keys to the kingdom of sociological and
panchromatic sexual edification." The package, #3 in the
FZ Audio Documentary Series, also contains Cheech
Marin's highly evocative liner notes recalling his 1968
audition for Zappa.

that FZ plays everything and it might be that there was

Eindelijk, eindelijk, eindelijk is de originele Ruben & the
Jets op cd uitgebracht. Tot nu toe (mei 2010) moesten we het
doen met een in mijn oren mislukte herstelsessie. Hoe zit
dit nu?
Aan het begin van het cd-tijdperk werden alle
oude lp's overgezet op cd's. Dat gebeurde soms onder
erbarmelijke omstandigheden, zowel auditief als visueel.
Zappa voegde daar nog een element aan toe, de mastertapes
(om geluid digitaal op te poetsen) van We're Only in it for
the Money en Cruisin' waren zo slecht, meldde hij, dat ze
niet meer te gebruiken waren. Hij loste dat op door zijn
toenmalige bassist en drummer (Arthur Barrow en Chad
Wackerman) nieuwe bas- en drumpartijen in te laten spelen.
De rest van de tapes waren nog wel bruikbaar. Het resultaat:
vreselijke cultuurverkrachting. De fans vielen er bij bosjes
over, maar de grootmeester gaf geen krimp. Ik was bij de
groep die zich de haren uit het hoofd trok van ellende, al
die mooie oude partijen, weg! Opgepimpd met nieuwe en uit
een andere tijd klinkende, partijen. WAH!!! Voor de Money-cd
kwam al met de rereleases begin jaren negentig goed
nieuws. Er was een herstel gemaakt van de oude tapes.
Logisch natuurlijk want oude mastertapes liggen overal in de
wereld; lp's werden namelijk op diverse plaatsen geperst en
elke perserij kreeg een mastertape. Dat had ik natuurlijk
ook allang bedacht. Alleen Cruisin' hield ook bij de laatste
Ryko-releases (approved Zappa etc.) de deviante ritmetracks.
Grrr. Het protest bleef aanhouden en ja hoor, na 42 jaar
vond keldergeest Joe Travers geschikte tapes en kon ermee
aan de slag. De hele handel kwam met extra toevoegingen op
Greasy Love Songs. Ben ik nu blij? Ja, ik ben meer dan blij,
ik ben gelukkig!
Alle liedjes klinken weer als toen ik
met een stereopick-up met een bananenstekkertje aangesloten
op een monoradio Cruisin' voor het eerst hoorde. Juist de
mooie, diepe, ronde bassen en het slagwerk met alle
echo-effecten op de bekkens. Prachtig, ontroerend bijna.
Alles klopt weer. Dat kan ik controleren, want ik heb al
jaren geleden een cd gebrand vanaf mijn lp uit de jaren
zestig. Die draaide ik altijd, nu hoeft dat niet meer.
Sommige extra's zijn opmerkelijk. Alles is natuurlijk meer
dan welkom. Stuff Up the Cracks blijkt een veel langer intro
te hebben dan wij wisten. Altijd een prima nummer geweest en
misschien wat afwijkend van de rest van de plaat, maar wel
een waardige afsluiter geweest. Ik had in de jaren
zestig iets van "hij (Zappa) kan het toch niet laten en zich
even uit te leven in een gitaarsolo". Valerie is
hartverscheurend op deze manier en een geinige parodie. Ook
het origineel is behoorlijk raar hoor. Het
nummer werd veel live gespeeld tijdens concerten in Europa
en onderging daar ook al allerlei droefs. Maar dan in de
goede zin natuurlijk. Klapper van deze cd is Love of My Life
uit Studio Z gezongen in duet door Ray Collins en
zangeres Mary Gonzales. Niet duidelijk is wie de
instrumenten speelt, dat zou gedaan kunnen zijn door Zappa
alleen; hij had toen immers een 5-sporen recorder.
Leuke
toevoegingen zijn twee interviewmomenten. Droll humor! Zo
leren we en passant dat Zappa helemaal fan is van de
Moonglows omdat die zo perfect zijn, bijna te. Opzoeken en
draaien die band! Prachtige muziek.
De vormgeving is,
zoals we de laatste tijd gewend zijn, prima. Het hoesje
glimt je tegemoet. De onderdelen Cruisin' zijn wat minimaal,
maar aan de andere kant zijn die compleet op de andere cd.
Leuk is de minifoto en de verpakking om de cd met daarop
Zappa's pseudoniem LaMarr Brewster. Prima, dank!
Cheech (van komisch duo Cheech en Chong) schrijft een leuk
stukje over dat hij bijna gezongen had bij the Mothers,
alleen moest hij naar Canada.
Nog een ding: Cruisin' is
nooit, maar dan ook nooit een parodie geweest, het is een
oprechte ode aan al die prachtige muziek uit de jaren 50. De
muziek uit Zappa's jeugd. En die muziek blijft je natuurlijk
altijd bij. Dat had ik nu met de originele Cruisin' with
Ruben & the Jets en nu is 'mijn' geluid en herinnering weer
terug. Nu kan ik pas echt gaan cruisen! |
